RUTH
A few moments before death,he remids the one who is not here.His Ruth.
In 1996, together with my oldest daughter Efrat, we were a part of Jewish Youth Delegation to Nazi Concentration Camps in Poland. During our visit to Brzezinka, I noticed on the ramp(place,where dr. Mengele ran his selections) a stone, that was in its shape and colour different from all the other stones lying there. When I picked it up it looked like a smoke for me. On one of its sides I could distinguish a shape of a woman crying to heaven. That's why I decided to immortalize that act,and in the place where I found that stone I put a sitting man,who just before his death reminds of his beloved one,that is not here any more, as she was exterminated by Nazi at once. The man looks as if he has just come with the latest trasport as he doesn't have any numer on his hand. It's clear that he was selected for work, not for immidiate extermination. Anyway. when he understood that the one who was with him is not alive, he sat humbly down thinking of his Ruth, waiting for his own death. In Brzezinka sitting down was punished with death sentence automatically.
I called this sculpture Ruth to honour my friend's mother, who survived tragedy of Brzezinka and Death March. I met her last year, during another youth delegation, this time with my son. When I asked her where she took her strength from to meet the tragic past, she told me that for her it is 'victory over Nazists'. That's why I decided that if it's victory let it be victory till the end, so the sculpture's name is Ruth. |

From the time I started cutving, I wanted to honour the bravery of uprising in Warsaw's Getto. When I got the news that among those heros, there was my father's cousin, who was after her death decorated with a medal(Grunwald Cross Third Class), together with Mordehaj Anielewicz and other commanders of that uprising, it reinforced my willing.
Having watched Polański's film 'The pianist'I started to curve.
The sculpture shows part of the destroyed getto's wall.Through the hole in the shape of a triangle, a sole is trying to get out.The sole is partly free and partly stuck in the darkness of getto. Together with the triangle they create a David's Star, symbol of our nation.Józef
